TEHRAN (IQNA) – A Palestinian political activist based in Lebanon slammed the US president’s move to announce Quds (Jerusalem) as the capital of the Zionist regime as an attempt to make up for Washington’s failures in the region.

Speaking to IQNA, Sheikh Muhammad Farid Qadura, who also heads the Badr Cultural Center in Lebanon, said US President Donald Trump has faced defeats in the region, especially in Syria and Iraq, and is now trying to make up for the defeats by challenging the entire Muslim Ummah (community).

“Undoubtedly, with (Muslims’) persistence on the path of resistance, this US measure will also end in failure,” he underlined.

Palestinians will use all their power to stand up against this “unwise” decision by the world arrogance, Sheikh Qadura said.

He expressed the hope that Intifada will intensify for clearing all Palestinian lands of enemy forces.

The cleric also called for solidarity of all Muslim nations in the world with the Palestinian people and their all-out support for Palestine.

Sheikh Qadura was among the participants in the 31st International Islamic Unity Conference held in Tehran earlier this week.

Trump officially declared the disputed city of Quds Israel’s capital, despite warnings from around the world that the measure risks triggering a fresh wave of violence in the Middle East.

In a speech at the White House on Wednesday, Trump said his administration would also begin a years-long process of moving the American embassy in Tel Aviv to the holy city.

The announcement was a major shift by Washington that overturns decades of US foreign policy.

Palestinian leaders had previously warned the move would threaten a two-state solution.

Israel has occupied East Quds since the 1967 Middle East war. It annexed the area in 1980 and sees it as its exclusive domain. Under international law, the area is considered to be occupied territory.
