TEHRAN (IQNA) – The International Union of Muslim Scholars called for the release of jailed scholars in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

According to Yeni Shafaq website, the union in a statement condemned the detention of scholars and religious figures in the two Arab countries for expressing their views.

The statement came after Salman al-Awada, a Saudi scholar detained four months ago, was taken to hospital for his deteriorating health conditions.

Awada, who is a critic of the Riyadh regime was taken into custody in September along with a number of other dissidents.

They were accused by the kingdom of cooperation with foreigners against national security.

Founded in 2004, the International Union of Muslim Scholars is headquartered in Qatar.

As the Saudi establishment is experiencing major upheavals, the kingdom has intensified is crackdown on dissent.

Some say the al Saud royal family is in the midst of a major crisis, and the intensification of the crackdown on dissent is taking place all out of desperation.
