TEHRAN (IQNA) – The grand Jaafarite Mufti of Lebanon underlined the need for an end to the war on Yemen and crimes committed against its people.

In a statement on Sunday, Sheikh Ahmad Qabalan called on the Arab League to take steps to prevent the continuation of the war, Al-Ahed News reported.

The blazes of the war on Yemen must be extinguished before they reach other countries, he warned.

He criticized Arab countries for their participation in the aggression or silences on the crimes committed in Yemen and said the Arab world is in its worst political situation.

Sheikh Qabalan also slammed the UN Security council for remaining indifferent to the massacre of Yemeni people.

He said the solution to the crisis in Yemen is political and not military.

Saudi Arabia, backed by the United States and regional allies, launched the war on Yemen in March 2015, with the goal of bringing the government of former Yemeni president Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi back to power and crushing the Ansarullah movement.

The war has left hundreds of thousands of Yemenis dead and displaced millions more. It has also destroyed Yemen’s infrastructure and spread famine and infectious diseases there.

Despite heavily-armed Saudi Arabia’s incessant bombardment of the impoverished country, the Yemeni armed forces and the Popular Committees have grown steadily in strength against the Saudi-led invaders and left Riyadh and its allies bogged down in the country.
