Taqwa, Justice & Patience, Necessary Characteristics for Quran Competition Judges

Justice and Taqwa (God-fearing), as well as patience and expertise are among the main characteristics necessary for jury members of international Quran competitions.

 Sayyed Suheil Najm Abdullah Al-Mousawi, head of the Quranic Society of Basra province in southern Iraq, made the remark in an interview with IQNA, adding that those selected to serve as jury members should also have the experience of previous presence in Quranic contests.

He stressed that Taqwa is the most important characteristic for someone who judges in international Quran competitions.

“He should also have Taqwa, patience, and fortitude to be able to properly assess the performance of the contenders. Moreover, he needs to be an expert in Quranic fields, especially in recitation and memorization of the Quran.”

Al-Mousawi said previous experience in national, regional and local Quran competitions is an important asset for serving at jury panel of international competitions.

Director of Al-Nour Al-Mobin Quran Center in Basra said both the judges and the contenders should be prepared for competition beforehand.

Asked about the presence of women in Quranic fields, he said women can play a significant role in creating a Quranic movement in society and to promote virtues in society.

He urged that women should be allowed to play this role and have the opportunity to take part in Quranic activities.  

The Iraqi Quran activist further stressed the important role Quran competitions in encouraging the society, especially the youth, to participate in Quranic activities.

He said these competitions also encourage the participants to make more efforts to strengthen their Quranic skills in such fields as memorization and recitation.

He said furthermore, that international Quran competitions are venues for the participants and Quranic figures to exchanges their views and experiences.

Al-Mousawi urged that holding forums and seminars on the sidelines of the contests can help to promote cooperation among Quranic figures and institutions.

He said Quranic programs such as competitions, forums and conferences, are venues for spreading the message of the Holy Quran around the world.

He noted that international Quran competitions bring together Quranic figures from around the world and are, therefore, an opportunity for introducing the message of the Holy Book to the world.
