TEHRAN (IQNA) - Finland's state radio channel YLE is broadcasting readings of the entire Quran in Finnish to improve knowledge of Muslim culture in the Nordic country.

According to Al-Sharq Al-Awsat website, the first part of the 60 half-hour readings was aired on March 7.

The Quranic radio program also includes comments by Anas Al-Hajjar, member of Finland’s Islamic Society and Professor Hämeen-Anttila, of Helsinki University who translated the Holy Quran into Finnish.

Developing peaceful coexistence among followers of different religions in this country is the main objective of the program.

Chairman of the Islamic Society, Mohammad Hussein Omar, described the Holy Quran readings as a good way to help people understand Islam and Muslim customs better.

There are an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 Muslims in Finland, which has an overall population of 5.5 million.

The country has only one building constructed as a mosque, in the early 1940s.
