TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Holy Quran has 114 Surahs and 6236 verses that were revealed to the Holy Prophet (PBUH) over 23 years.

Why Some Verses Are Repeated in Quran

Among the verses of the Holt Book, there are some words, phrases, verses, subjects and stories and have been repeated a number times. What is the reason for these repetitions?

The Quran was gradually revealed to the holy Prophet (PBUH) over 23 years answering different needs. One reason for the repetition of certain concepts, phrases or verses is laying emphasis on their importance and drawing attention to them.

Sometimes, though, the repetition is for another purpose as God wants to get acknowledgement from people. For example verse 13 of Surah Ar-Rahman is repeated 31 times in the Surah: “Which of the favors of your Lord do you deny?”

Another reason is offering a lesson. The stories of the Quran teach us to avoid the path taken by those who denied the truth and rebels against God and take the path of those who took the right path.

That is why the stories related to Prophet Abraham (AS) and Prophet Moses (AS) are repeated. The greatness and complexity of these stories are such that they are referred to in different verses of the Holy Book.

There are many good and bad characters in these stories whose fates offer lessons one can learn a lot from.

Also, repetition is sometimes aimed at institutionalizing a culture and a way of life and sometimes for reminding again and again.

Every repetition in the Quran has a special reason and it can be considered as being among the Holy Book’s rhetorical and linguistic intricacies.
