Old Mosque Demolished, Turned into Landfill in Azerbaijan: Report

TEHRAN (IQNA) – An old mosque has reportedly been demolished and turned into a landfill in Azerbaijan Republic.

 

According to reports of Azeri media outlets, Sayyid Sultan Hussein Mosque located in Novkhani, has been demolished.

The reports say that the mosque dates back to the eighteenth century AD.

Meanwhile, Shafaqna News Agency reported that the mosque was site was apparently being bulldozed on Monday amid growing concerns among Shia Muslims in the country.

“The government authorities blatantly encroached on the mosque and turned it into a landfill,” the report quoted local people as saying.

“It is truly shameful that mosques are being violated and destroyed at the hands of the government that claims to be affiliated with Islam,” they said.

According to another eyewitness, municipality of the city, dumps waste in the area on a daily basis.

Meanwhile, the country’s State Service for Protection, Development and Restoration of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture has acknowledged that household waste is being dumped near the historic mosque despite measure to stop this trend.

Local people say the municipality has not carried out any real measure to stop this violation.
