IQNA – The Holy Quran mentions the issue of raising children in a ten-point charter in Surah Luqman.

The Quran orders us to be kind to our parents

In this charter, the first point is a commandment to monotheism and the second is one about doing good to parents.

In Verse 13 of Surah Luqman, God says: “Luqman advised his son telling him, ‘My son, do not consider anything equal to God, for it is the greatest injustice.’”

This is the first of the ten divine orders, the second of which is not mentioned by Luqman himself but independently, because it is a commandment about parents and thus it would not be very good for Luqman to urge his son about the need to obey parents himself.

“And We charged the human concerning his parents, for his mother bore him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning was in two years. Be thankful to Me and to your parents, to Me is the arrival.” (Verse 14 of Surah Luqman)

In this verse, God first commands to be kind to both parents, and then pays special attention to the mother, referring to the difficulties and hardships that the mother goes through during pregnancy and after childbirth.

It points out the weakness and fatigue that the mother has during pregnancy, and then the difficulty she goes through during the two years of breastfeeding the baby, which requires special thanks and appreciation from the child.
