TEHRAN (IQNA) – Adl (justice) is an attribute of God and belief in it is among the tenets of Islamic faith. But what does it exactly mean?

What Does Adl Mean?

The word Adl has been defined as “the opposite of injustice”, “putting everything in its right place”, and “doing everything as it should be done”.

Imam Ali (AS) said: Adl places everything in its own place.

When we say God is Adil (just), it means that in the world, He has created everything within a special and proper order and framework.

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) said: Heavens and earth are in place with Adl.

As for lawmaking, all divine laws are also just and appropriate and in harmony with the purpose of creation and these laws contain no prejudice, disharmony and bias.

It has been said that God never does injustice to creatures and acts with adl about them and treats them with Adl.

So the outcome of divine justice is that God gives every human being responsibilities and duties based on his capacities. “God does not impose on any soul a responsibility beyond its ability.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 286)

Then God will judge each person based on his capacities, abilities and efforts. “Then, when their Messenger comes the matter is justly decided between them; they are not wronged.” (Surah Yunus, Verse 47)

And ultimately, reward or punishment is given to the person based on his behavior and conduct: “No soul will be in the least bit wronged on that Day and no one will receive any recompense other than what he deserves for his deeds.” (Surah Yasin, Verse 54)
